Companies in the UK are now realising that caring for elderly parents can affect their employees’ wellbeing, both personally and professionally. They know their staff can be stretched to breaking point by family crises and as a result there is a new drive to help them cope by giving them information and support. Because of her book Now Where Did I Put My Glasses? Jackie has become key to this new move. She gives symposia to companies on subjects covered in the book, everything from how to cope generally to specific subjects like being a carer, and dealing with a parent’s dementia.
Media Studies: Since she retired from active magazine editing, Jackie has given master classes to media studies students on various aspects of practical journalism, from in-depth writing skills and writing for specific markets to the rigours of editing, page design and use of headlines and magazine cover lines.
Magazine Consultancy
Calling upon her experience as a national and international magazine editor Jackie works with publishers of both national and regional magazines in a wide variety of roles tailored to the needs of her clients.
Magazine doctor: Jackie assesses existing magazines in terms of how it might perform better, editorially and structurally. This is done confidentially with the management team or in conjunction with editors and staff, and varies in scope from a tweak to a major revamp
Seminars: Jackie gives these for publishers/marketing/editorial staff on anything from cover philosophy to issues of content, targeting the market, branding, increasing loyalty, making the most of your cash and maximising free publicity.
Staff training: She gives training days to magazine editors/staff on various skills - writing for a market, making covers work hard, writing techniques. Jackie also has a module in the Periodical Publishers’ Association syllabus, The Editor As A Publicist, training editors in dealing with the media.
Recruitment: Jackie works with publishers to interview and assess candidates for editorships and senior editorial positions.
New Launches: She works with companies to develop ideas for new launches.
